What is mate tea?
Mate tea is a unique and delicious beverage made from the leaves and branches of the yerba mate tree (Ilex paraguariensis). The term "mate" comes from the drinking vessel used for drinking it, the matí, a gourd . The yerba mate is placed in this gourd and then topped up with water. This invigorating brew is then sipped through a special filter tube called a bombilla . Due to its method of consumption, its taste, and its effects, mate is likely unlike any other beverage you have ever tasted.
That's why people in South America also know where the yerba mate tree grows and where the culture of the drink originated. Especially in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, mate is ubiquitous. Our yerba mate trees grow in the shade of other trees and are harvested only every two years. This allows each leaf ample time to develop, resulting in our yerba mate being richer in antioxidants and minerals than varieties harvested only once or twice a year. After harvesting, the leaves undergo gentle processing, never coming into contact with smoke or fire. Thanks to our state-of-the-art air-drying process, we can preserve the naturally fresh flavor and purity of the leaves.
